USFFL Season XXVI Week 5 Recap

Philadelphia Eagles and Denver Broncos line up at the line of scrimmage.

Week 5 delivered a full slate of narrow finishes, late swings and standout individual performances. The coaches’ game reports supplied much of the week’s texture: a last-play field goal in Los Angeles, an overtime escape for the Chargers, and Seattle’s perfect start all stood out.

Week 5 Recap

Denis Ljung’s New England Patriots remained unbeaten with a 38-28 road win over Zach Zalesne’s Buffalo Bills. Buffalo erased an early 14-0 deficit, but New England answered with a 65-yard touchdown drive before halftime. The defining play came early in the fourth: after Harold Landry’s nine-yard sack forced third-and-19, Milton Williams intercepted a flat pass and returned it 42 yards for a touchdown. The Patriots’ defense then forced a three-and-out and a turnover on downs to close out the game.

Dennis Crowley’s Seattle Seahawks also moved to 5-0, holding off Vince Trivelpiece’s Tampa Bay Buccaneers 37-30. Seattle built a 24-0 lead behind three Zach Charbonnet touchdowns, then answered Tampa Bay’s push with Sam Darnold’s 29-yard scoring pass to Jaxon Smith-Njigba. Kenneth Walker III totaled 198 yards from scrimmage, while Leonard Williams recorded three sacks and Seattle intercepted Baker Mayfield three times.

Anthony Tangorra’s Los Angeles Chargers came back from two fourth-quarter deficits inside the final two minutes to beat David Mugmon’s Washington Commanders 37-34 in overtime. Cameron Dicker made two 56-yard field goals—one just before halftime and one to tie the game at the end of regulation—before his 40-yarder settled overtime. Justin Herbert threw for 317 yards and three touchdowns, while Washington’s offense produced 229 rushing yards in a game the Chargers were fortunate to survive.

Tony Telleria’s Indianapolis Colts prevailed 34-28 over Paul Conti’s Las Vegas Raiders in another fourth-quarter shootout. Las Vegas tied the game twice in the final period, including Ashton Jeanty’s 48-yard touchdown catch with 4:12 left. Daniel Jones then drove Indianapolis to Alec Pierce’s 26-yard touchdown with 1:37 remaining. Jones finished with 350 passing yards and five touchdowns; Jonathan Taylor caught 14 passes for 154 yards.

John Fries’s Baltimore Ravens defeated Rudy Gobin’s Houston Texans 26-21. Houston twice answered Baltimore scoring drives, but a pivotal fourth-quarter sequence swung the game: Jordan Stout pinned Houston at its own two-yard line, and Alohi Gilman tackled Dalton Schultz for a safety. Houston reached the Baltimore 19 on its last substantial drive, but Schultz lost a fumble to end the threat.

Rich Peers’ San Francisco 49ers edged Scott Schumacher’s Los Angeles Rams 41-38 on Eddy Piñeiro’s 45-yard field goal as time expired. Los Angeles led 22-15 at halftime and 29-23 after three quarters, but the game featured six lead changes. The Rams tied it late after San Francisco’s first-and-goal opportunity stalled; with 22 seconds remaining, the 49ers started at their own 40 and used two short gains plus an offside penalty to bring Piñeiro into range. Christian McCaffrey rushed 18 times for 102 yards and three touchdowns, while Matthew Stafford threw for 354 yards and three scores. Los Angeles was without halfback Kyren Williams, affecting the Rams’ play calling.

Elsewhere, Donnie Hastings’s New York Jets outlasted Bruce Mogg’s Dallas Cowboys 45-38 behind Breece Hall’s four touchdowns. Tim Hay’s Philadelphia Eagles rallied past David Kukafka’s Denver Broncos 27-26 on DeVonta Smith’s three-yard touchdown catch with 15 seconds left. Dan Suhr’s New Orleans Saints beat Scott Kaplan’s New York Giants 28-24 in a penalty-heavy contest, and John Carter’s Arizona Cardinals defeated Matt LaSalle’s Tennessee Titans 42-17 behind Jacoby Brissett’s 324 yards and five touchdowns. Joe Golden’s Jacksonville Jaguars edged Tim Ervin’s Kansas City Chiefs 20-19; penalties and missed opportunities left Kansas City just short.

Game of the Week: Philadelphia Eagles 27, Denver Broncos 26

Tim Hay’s Philadelphia Eagles produced the Week 5 comeback, erasing a late six-point deficit to beat David Kukafka’s Denver Broncos 27-26. Denver led 23-13 early in the fourth quarter and still held a 26-20 advantage after Wil Lutz’s 18-yard field goal with 1:30 left.

The decisive Philadelphia drive began with a 51-yard completion to Saquon Barkley with one minute remaining. Jalen Hurts then found DeVonta Smith for a three-yard touchdown with 15 seconds left, completing the rally. Hurts finished with 303 passing yards and two touchdowns.

The game was a tense, mistake-filled battle for both sides, with penalties, fumbles and interceptions creating a volatile second half. Denver had reclaimed the lead through Courtland Sutton’s two touchdown catches and received 95 rushing yards from J.K. Dobbins, but Philadelphia made the final play to take the one-point win.
