The Chiefs offense was firing on all cylinders in this title game on the path to victory. It was the Chiefs defense that shined on the first possession of the game, forcing a quick 3-and-out and a punt back to KC. Mahomes then led an 11-play drive into Dallas territory that would stall after a holding penalty, leaving the Chiefs to settle for a 48 yard field goal from Harrison Butker for a quick 3-0 lead. A personal foul by the Chiefs on the ensuing kickoff would give the Cowboys great field position at the 40 yard line to start their 2nd drive. Dallas committed fully to the run on this second series, with Ezekiel Elliott getting the call on 5 consecutive plays to get to field goal range, but when a dump pass on 3rd and 12 netted only 8 yards, Dallas elected to attempt a field goal on 4th and 4 at the Chiefs 27 yard line, but Kai Forbath would miss the attempt to return possession to the Chiefs. Mahomes would move right down the field with six straight passes, the last one being a 27-yard TD strike to Tyreek Hill, making the score 10-0 Chiefs late in the first quarter.

Hill would tweak his hammy on the play and would not return to the game. The Cowboys desperately needed a drive to stay close, and they responded. Dallas embarked on an 11-play 84 yard drive that included 7 more runs for 59 yards, the last one coming on a critical 3rd and 3 from the KC 12 yard line, as Dak Prescott ran the ball right up the middle for the touchdown. Dallas now trailed 10-7 at the 12 minute mark of the 2nd quarter. The Chiefs offensive machine came right back with a 13-play scoring drive. Running back LeSean McCoy had rushes of 13 and 14 yards for first downs to help get the Chiefs into Dallas territory and eventually the offense found themselves staring at a 3rd and 10 from the Dallas 30 yard line. Mahomes would throw short to Mecole Hardman who was successfully double teamed by LB Leighton Vander Esch, but still managed a reception of 22 yards on his receiver card. Three plays later 3rd and goal from the 8, Mahomes would hit Hardman again for the touchdown and a 17-7 lead with just over 6 minutes remaining in the first half. Facing a 2-score deficit again, the Cowboys put together a 14-play drive into the red zone of KC. But on 3rd and 7 from the 8 yard line, Chiefs safety Juan Thornhill blitz around the edge and sacked Prescott to force another field goal attempt from Forbath. The sack moved the attempt from needing a 2-11 roll to a 2-8, 11 and 12 roll … and the dice result of 9 made it a second straight miss for Forbath. With just 30 seconds left in the first half, the Chiefs would just run the ball twice to get us to a halftime score of 17-7 in favor of Kansas City.
The Chiefs would get the 2nd half kickoff and Dallas desperately needed a stop from their defense. But the Chiefs offensive machine just continued to march, with 6 straight pass plays that set up the Chiefs with a 1st and Goal from the Dallas 6 yard line. Back-to-back 3 yard dives from McCoy and then Damien Williams for the score, put the Chiefs on top 24-7. On the very next series, the Chiefs defense would force a 3-and-out and the second punt of the game. A few plays into the next drive, Dallas would put the Chiefs offensive machine in a hole, facing a 3rd and 17 from their own 37 yard line. But the Chiefs offense would simply not be denied on this day. With a comfortable lead already in place, the Chiefs elected to play it safe and just run LeSean McCoy around the edge. McCoy found daylight in the Cowboys secondary and ran up the sidelines for 39 yards… 1st and 10 at the Dallas 24 yard line. The Cowboys defense would hold, and Harrison Butker would hit his second field goal of the game for a 27-7 lead with just over 5 minutes left in the 3rd quarter. It looked like the rout may be on, but just a few plays into the next drive, Dak Prescott would hit Michael Gallup on a 79-yard deep post for a quick-strike touchdown to make the score 27-17 with 3 minutes remaining in the 3rd quarter.
They were back in the game but needed a stop. Unfortunately for Dallas, it was more of the same from the KC offense. The Chiefs came right back with a 10-play 75 yard drive that ended with an 8 yard TD pass from Mahomes to LeSean McCoy. Damien Williams would run in the 2-point conversion to put the Chiefs on top 35-14 with just over 13 minutes remaining in the game. The Cowboys next drive took them inside the Chiefs 40 yard line, but Chiefs linebacker would intercept a first down pass to return possession to KC with 10:48 left in the game. The Chiefs would march right back down for another score, with an 11-play drive that culminated in a 4 yard TD pass from Mahomes to Kelce, his 4th TD pass of the game. The Chiefs were now u 42-14 and the game was essentially over. Dak Prescott would add another long TD pass of 46 yards to Michael Gallup in the final seconds to get us to a final score of 42-21.In the second half of this game, the Chiefs would put up 25 points and rack up 21:15 out of 30:00 in time of possession. The Chiefs had 33 first downs in this game and outgained Dallas 433 to 360. Dallas was a respectable 6-for-11 on 3rd down conversions, but KC was even better with a 9-for-12 on 3rd downs. The Chiefs had zero punts and zero turnovers in this game, and that’s a formula that is going to win almost every time.
The Chiefs become the first team in USFFL history to three-peat, winning the last 3 Superbowls against the Eagles, Saints and Cowboys. Prior to winning those 3 titles, the Chiefs lost back-to-back Superbowls to Dennis Crowley and his Seahawks. Coaches Crowley and Ervin are now tied with four Superbowl trophies apiece. Honorable mention to Vince Trivelpiece with 3 trophies in his case. The Chiefs have been in 6 of the last 7 Superbowls and have put together a 19-3 record in post-season games over that 7 year span. The only losses were the 2 Superbowl losses to Crowley’s Seahawks and a first round playoff loss to the Texans (under Bruce Mogg??) back in 2014. It’s been a pretty amazing run for this team and this coach. You do not put together a run like that without tons and tons of good luck and good fortune in key moments. We’ll have to see next season if that luck will continue to march alongside this team, or if another contender is ready to snuff out the pilot light on this team.
Congratulations to Harlan on an amazing run of his own this year and a great season. He called a great game, but it was just one of those days.
