Tony Pollard carried the ball 16 times for 108 yards. Dallas was in control on third down, converting on 9 of 16 opportunities. They controlled the action both on the ground and in the air. They out-ran Tampa Bay 158 to 37 yards, and out-passed them 317 to 212 yards. Dallas had the advantage in time of possession, having the ball for 36:16. Dallas was on top at the half 10 to 9. A hightlight for Tampa Bay was a pass to Chris Godwin that covered 51 yards with 0:18 left in the 3rd quarter. But in the end that fine effort was wasted.. Play RecapThe Bucs visited the Cowboys to kick-off season XXIII in the USFFL. The Boys got their season off to a great start with a long drive for a quick 7-0 lead but Tampa fought back with one of their own. While Coach Vince’s try for two was stopped, his Bucs held the Cowboys quiet for the rest of the first and most of the second quarter. A field goal gave Tampa a 9-7 lead but Dak led the Boys on a late drive for three and 10-9 lead at the half. Just like the first quarter, Dallas came out humming and struck for a quick 7 and, after holding Brady down again, Maher added three for a 20-7 lead in the third. However, deep in his own territory, Brady reached in to his bag of tricks and threw a 51 yard bomb in a third and one situation. From there, he guided the Bucs the rest of the way and the two point conversion cut the lead to three going in to the 4th quarter. Prescott, Pollard and company responded with another seven and later tacked on three more for the final score of 30-17. Enjoyed the game Vince!

The Patriots headed down to South Beach to take on Tony T’s Dolphins and come away with a 17-10 victory. Bailey Zappe, who beat the KC Chiefs in a pre-season game to earn the starting job (yes Tim, I threw this in just as a dig to you and your Chiefs), was mostly ineffective in his start. He was 15-23 for just 98 yards and was pulled with 6:36 to play in the 3rd Qtr with New England trailing 10-7 and facing a 3rd and 11 at the Miami 40. Jones hit Agholor for 10 yards on his 1st play and then the Pats converted a 4th and 1. The drive would end with FG to knot the score at 10. The game winning score came with 6:36 to play in the game. With New England facing a 3rd and 6 from the Miami 7, Jones dropped back, couldn’t find an open man and tucked the ball and ran it in the the TD on the “must run”. Tua had a very subpar game finishing 20-34 for 180 yards, 1 TD and 1 INT. (edited)

CHIEFS ESCAPE WITH A WILD WIN OUT WEST AGAINST THE CARDINALS (40-37) IN OVERTIME
The season got off to just a terrible start for the Kansas City Chiefs. After an opening touchback, the Chiefs took possession at the 25. On the very first play from scrimmage, Mahomes suffered an injury that would keep him out the entire first half. On the play he suffered the injury, the defense was penalized for encroachment to wipe out the play. And so when backup QB Chad Henne entered the game for the Chiefs, there was still 15:00 showing on the game clock. And Henne delivered exactly what the Chiefs needed, a drive of 12 plays and 75 yards, ending with a 9-yard TD pass to JuJu Smith-Schuster to put the Chiefs up 7-0. The Cards came right back and on the 3rd offensive play of their season when Deandre Hopkins caught a flat pass, shook a tackle and went 56 yards to the end zone to tie the game up 7-7 halfway through the first quarter. This was the beginning of 31 unanswered points by the Cardinals before halftime.
For the remainder of the first half the Cardinals pushed their advantage with Mahomes out, and they got some breaks along the way, including a 68 yard pick-6 from corner Marco Wilson. Less than two minutes later, the Cards were in the end zone again, this time on a 31-yard end run TD from Kyler Murray. All of this helped the Cardinals capture a sizeable 31-7 halftime lead against the Chiefs. It got worse for KC when the 2nd half began, as the Cardinals took the opening possession of the 3rd quarter and drove all the way to a 1st and Goal at the Chiefs 3 yard line. The Chiefs defense would HOLD, however, and the Cardinals would settle for a short field goal and a 34-7 lead. There was now 7:48 remaining in the 3rd quarter and the Cardinals had rattled off the last 34 points. Finally, Mahomes entered the game.
On his first drive of the season, Mahomes would drive the Chiefs 75 yards on 12 plays and they would score the TD on a 1-yard dive by Jerrick McKinnon. The score was now 34-14 with 2:42 left in the 3rd quarter. After forcing the Cardinals to punt in just four plays, the Chiefs offense would also stall in just four plays and were forced to punt back to the Cardinals with under 14 minutes remaining. A few minutes later, at the 10:30 mark of the 4th, Matt Prater would drill a 41-yard field goal to extend the lead to 23 points… 37-14. A couple of plays into the next drive, Mahomes would hit McKinnon on a key flat pass that went for 49 yards into the red zone. Two plays later, Mahomes was forced out of the pocket on a must run and scrambled for a 13 yard touchdown. Isaiah Pacheco ran the 2-point conversion up the middle successfully, and the Chiefs now trailed 37-22 with 8:42 remaining. Six plays later, the Cardinals were punting back to KC. The Chiefs took over at the 5:06 mark and put together a 15-play drive that culminated in a 4-yard TD pass from Mahomes to Noah Gray with just 37 seconds remaining in the game. Harrison Butker hit the PAT, and the Chiefs now trailed 37-29.
The Chiefs would RECOVER the onside kickoff with 30 seconds remaining at midfield. Mahomes would scramble for 18 yards and then hit back-to-back short passes to set up a 1st and Goal for the Chiefs at the Cardinals 3-yard line with just 8 seconds remaining. Tailback Isaiah Pacheco would dive over the pile into the end zone on the next play as time expired. With 0:00 on the clock, the Chiefs set up for the all-important 2-point conversion, and Pacheco would run it in one more time to tie the game 37-37 at the end of regulation. On the second play of overtime, Kyler Murray would throw his second interception of the game to give the Chiefs the ball in the Arizona red zone. A few plays later, Harrison Butker would drill the 49-yard field goal for the walkoff winner for Kansas City.
Mahomes would go 20-for-31 in the 2nd half of the game for 253 yards and the one passing TD. Jerrick McKinnon was the primary benefactor, with 10 catches for 144 yards and a rushing TD. James Connor put up 100 yards on the ground for Arizona in 27 carries, and Kyler Murray added another 59 rushing as well. Linebacker Nick Bolton did most of the work for the Chiefs against that running attack, with 15 tackles and a sack in this game. The Chiefs open at 1-0 after this big comeback and will return home to Arrowhead now to face the defending champion Los Angeles Chargers in week 2. The Arizona Cardinals take the tough loss here to open 0-1, as they prepare to travel next week for a game in Vegas with the Raiders.

Colts 28, Texans 14
IRL this ended in a 20-20-tie, but the Strat-O Gods decreed a different ending this go ’round in Texas Coach Rudy Gobin’s inaugural USFFL game.
Although with the first play from scrimmage for the year being a Matt Ryan flat pass into a double loaded zone, serving up a Pick Six for Houston Linebacker Christian Harris, you can’t say Indy didn’t try their best to make Rudy feel right at home.
The next two Indy drives resulted in fumbling the ball away on the Houston 18 yard line, and a missed 30 yard field goal attempt, while Coach Gobin guided a 63 yard Houston drive for another TD to take a 14-0 lead at the close of the 1st quarter.
But it was a woeful tale for Houston the rest of the way, with four punts, a pick, and two drives ended turning the ball over on downs. Davis Mills posted a total of 66 yards in the air for the game.
After their gaff filled 1st q, the Colts righted themselves and gradually pulled back into the game, finally taking the lead on the second of three Jonathan Taylor TD’s in the second half.
Ryan finished 32 for 38, for 294 yards, with the running game chipping in 137 yards.
No injuries. Houston travels next to Denver, while Indy faces yet another Divisional opponent in Jacksonville. (edited)

Pittsburgh at Cincinnati
In a game where Joe Burrow shined for the Bengals the final score wasn’t indicative of the story. Burrow was 24/33 for 244 yards, 1 TD and 0 INTs. Joe Mixon didn’t have a big yardage night but found paydirt 3 times. Kenny Picket struggled and Mitch Trubisky wasn’t any better for the Steelers. Combined the Pittsburgh QBs were 12/33 for 102 yards. Najee Harris however lit it up for the Steelers by ripping off 132 yards on 22 carries. Pittsburgh ran all over Cincinnati and averaged nearly 7 yards a carry for all rushers combined. The true story of this game was Pittsburgh’s inability to punch the ball into the end zone when they were down in close. On 5 different drives the Steelers were inside the Cincinnati 10 but only managed 1 TD and 2 FGs. It wasn’t a case of good defensive calls but flat-out bad rolls on offense. Pittsburgh only punted once all game. Peter called a very good game and deserved a better fate. He’ll get another chance later in the season. (edited)

SF took the lead late in the 3rd Qtr and then it was back and forth until Chi tied it as time expired. Only 2 pens for each team and other than a fumble and missed FG by SF it was a very clean game with great play calling by the Chi OC and especially the DC. The Chi team is not carded well and Mike did an outstanding job keeping all the Niner faithful nervous all night long. Great job Mike, almost pulled off, arguably, the upset of the year in the opening week.

Green Bay 32 Minnesota 23 For one game at least the Packers offense looked like last seasons team. But this was all due to the dice. Green Bay gets nearly 450 yards of balanced offense and manages seven trips into the red zone. No one is expecting this to continue. Tough game for Skeeter, he called a very good game and lost Justin Jefferson to injury (remainder of game) in the first quarter.

BROWNS 28 PANTHERS 24
Holy first game stresser. Ownership sold the Falcons and bought the Browns this offseason. Cleveland’s first game? Jess Geller and Carolina. Although Atlanta won the USFFL NFC South in 2021 at 10-6, Gellers boys knocked them off twice, 20-16 and 22-17. So, yup, this one also ended up a one score game.
CLE won the toss and took the ball to start and both teams punted their first possessions. Both scored scored TDs next but the Panthers led 8-7 when they converted for two after a Browns penalty moved them to the 1-yard line on the XP. CLE responded with another TD drive, the first was 83 yards in 8 plays. This one was also 8 plays but covered 90 yards. Key plays were QB Jacoby Brissett hitting Donovan Peoples-Jones long for 31, a couple good gain flats to Nick Chubb and Chubb capped it going 15 yards to paydirt to make it 14-8. Teams exchanged punts the rest of the half aside from one Philip Walker INT. Walker sat the second half for Darnold. CLE held just a 50-yard edge on offense (208-150) into the locker room. First downs were even (10). CAR struggled on the ground (15-44) despite a 4-yard avg, however that was helped by a 15-yard D-Onta Foreman run as the Panthers 2 yards a carry otherwise. Brissett was on fire 12-16, 126 yards and a TD. Nick Chubb ran for 87 yards on 11 carries and caught 6 passes for 64 yards (151 total first half yards).
Darnold led to Panthers to a TD and FG on Carolina’s first two possessions led by a 32-yard Chuba Hubbard scamper and TD pass to Terrace Marshall Jr. for the TD to make it 15-14. Cleveland responded with a matching TD sparked by another Brissett/Peoples-Jones bomb covering 52 yards. Brissett hit a clutch 3rd & Goal score to Harrison Bryant and a 21-15 lead. After the FG it was 21-18 CAR with 1:12 left in the 3rd. The Browns OC then got a little too pass happy leading to consecutive Brissett interceptions. The first on an excellent Geller double on People-Jones and the next on Brissett’s flat right. Carolina capitalized on the second pick but could only tie it at 21-21 with 8:06 to go when the possession stalled at the Cleveland 3. The Browns could only muster one first before punting and the Panthers took over at their 27 with 5:24 left all tied up.
Darnold hit DJ Moore right away for 13 yards. What happened next was clean livin’. Foreman picked up a guessed wrong OT for 23 yards but the game froze after the roll. It never showed on my screen but did on Jess’ however the saved file didn’t take it. We agreed to make the same calls and see what happened. OT wrong … 21 yards. Lol. I was happy that happened. That would’ve bugged me. Foreman banged out another 21 yards to make it 1st and 10 at the CLE 12 with 3:00 left. Chuba Hubbard picked up 4 yards but the Browns D was able to drag down Foreman twice for 1-yard losses. Carolina took the lead 24-21 as Eddy Piniero hit from 27 yards. The Panthers kicked two field goals on consecutive possessions that reached the 10 or deeper and it would come back to kill them.
A touchback put the Browns starting at their 25 with only 1:52 left down a FG. With the Panthers in a nickel Nick Chubb flipped the game on its head in two plays. Off tackle 29 yards. Off tackle 33 yards. Boom. Cleveland was sitting at the Carolina 13 with 1:00 left. The Panthers successfully keyed Chubb for a loss of one but he picked up 8 on 2nd and 11 before Brissett hit Cooper for a 3-yard game-winner with :15 left. WOW! Great game Jess. Thankfully, it’ll be another 4 years before I see him again.
Chubb ended with 269 total yards of offense including 191 rushing averaging over 9 yards a carry (21 carries)!!! The teams combined for 382 yards rushing!!!! :open_mouth: Carolina ran 72 plays to Cleveland’s 53 and held the ball for 9 more minutes. The Browns host the J-E-T-S Jets, Jets, Jets, and Coach Donnie while the Panthers visit the New York Football Giants. (edited)
