The 2020 version of Strat-o-Matic’s Digital Football Game is out and ready to download. There are not a lot of changes for 2020 with the exception of the fact that you will need the new game in order to play the 2020 and the 1960 Seasons. The 2019 teams will come with your purchase. The USFFL strongly recommends that you purchase the game with the “Card Image” option. Make sure that you purchase the Card Images at the time you buy the game, because you are not able to add the images after your initial purchase.
In addition to the ability to play the 2019 season, SOM Football 2020 includes the following changes:
Safeties
When reading the Punt Returner’s card for a Free Kick return certain adjustments must be made. If a Fair Catch reading occurs then roll 2-dice and add them together to determine the return yardage. (This accounts for the fact that fair catches almost never occur on Free Kicks). Accept negative
yardage punt returns as-is, without adjustment. For punt return yardage of 0 or greater roll 2-dice and add their sum to the original punt return yardage to determine the number of yards the punt was returned. Important: This also applies to returns found on the opponent’s punt return card. Also note that after a free kick all punts are returned and there is never a punt on which the ball rolls further so that the punt is not returnable. In other words, if a “1” is rolled on the white die the punt
should still be returned. This is because by NFL rules there is no such thing as a punt rolling to a rest on a free kick as it is considered a live ball.
Statistical Note: Even though you use the Punt Return card to resolve a free kick it is officially considered a kickoff return for statistical purposes.
Running Quarterbacks
In addition, certain Quarterbacks are such running threats that they will qualify for additional end runs. Any Quarterback who averaged 9.5 or more rushes per team game will qualify. To determine the number of extra end runs he is eligible for divide the QB’s rushing attempts by his team’s number of games, subtract 9 and round to the nearest integer. For example, in 2019 Lamar Jackson rushed 176 times and his team played 16 games. 176/16 – 9 = 2 (no need to round since this is already a whole number). So he is eligible for 2 additional end runs. Given this rule, this is how to work out Lamar Jackson’s End Run Limit for 2019:
• From the chart he is eligible for 6 end runs, as follows: 176/30 which is 5.87 which is 6 rounded.
• He is rated as a Pistol Quarterback so he gets 2 additional end runs.
• He also exceeded 9.5 rushes per team game, and according to the above calculation that works out to 2 more end runs.
• So in total 2019 Lamar Jackson is allowed up to 10 end runs per game (6 + 2 + 2).
That’s It!
Not a lot of changes in 2020, so if you are comfortable with the 2019 game, you will be right at home in 2020. Good luck and have a great season!
